Get to the Point

Learning Outcomes: 6A2 and 6D2

Within this session we completed a number of quick idea generation tasked based on our concerns, anxieties and questions surrounding our own creative practice. Initially we wrote anything that came to mind on post-it notes within 3 mins and then put them away. This was helpful as it got me thinking about my own concerns and what I wanted to learn in order to progress into industry and develop my own practice. From this we focused on our main concern, which for me was how to impress and get into your desired studio (mine being Alphabet in Manchester). Once we had looked at our own concerns we then went around and look/added to others which was helpful as a few had similar issues/concerns to myself such as confidence in your work and contacting studios effectively (see figures 1-2). Once we had added to everyones within out group, we focused on two concerns that complimented each other 'how to be confident enough in your work to get into the studio that fits you'.

Once we had established a common issue within the group we researched different solutions to the problem, such as tailoring your work to a specific studio and only including work your passionate about and believe in. This lead to us to think about how we could make this knowledge accessible to others, some ideas where featuring a how to research studios section within the university magazine Nest or an online form on It's Nice That, that allows to select options relevant to you e.g. studio designer, editorial etc, to come up with solutions of how to edit your portfolio for those types of studios. After deciding on the It's Nice That feature idea we created a tweet and emoji sentence to represent the idea/what we had learnt 'a portfolio is like sending a nude only pic your best bits and be selective with who sees' emoji sentence (see figure 3).

Overall this session was helpful as I discovered some helpful tips on how to edit my portfolio when sending it out to certain studios, I also learnt more about what I want to get out of PPP throughout the year. I want to get experience within studios that I could see myself working in (in Manchester/Liverpool), build my online presence more to be notice within the design community as a professional rather than a student and to believe in my work more and think its good enough to be sent to professionals.
