Berlin: Studio Pandan

Whilst in Berlin I visited Studio Pandan with a number of other students. I personally found this studio visit and talk very interesting as it was interesting to see work from a different country as well as seeing how a small studio works. I particularly liked Publishing as Artistic Practice (see figure 1-3) due to the consideration throughout the book as they took a dense, text heavy publication and created a considered and interesting book. This was mainly due to how they typeset different sections of the book based on the topic of the text and tone of voice. This allowed the text to flow as if your reading a a conversation/argument rather than an academic text. Furthermore the use of title pages (see figures 2-3) to introduce new texts further sets the tone of the text/argument. This publication made me consider how much consideration and backing goes into my own work and how I can incorporate more thought within my work, as every section of the publication was considered from the title pages to how each argument was typeset based on subject, opinion, tone etc. This consideration is applied across all aspects of their work from web design to publications which is an aspect I'm working to incorporate within my own practice.

In relation to them running their own studio they stressed the hours spent on each project as there they don't have multiple employees they can delegate work too. This means the balance and time management is key to their practice as they can have up to 10 projects running at once. However they said thats not as intimidating as it sounds as their are breaks when your waiting to hear back from a client which allows you to work on other projects. Furthermore they also highlighted how they like to collaborate with different designers and studios as it allows you to broaden the creative process. Overall I found this talk very helpful as it has inspired me to consider and interrogate my work more closely so that every aspect is thought through as this allows you to consider all options. Furthermore it was interesting to see how their studio works as I find the idea of setting up on my own interesting.
