Set Design: Annie Atkins

After starting to consider set design as an avenue after university I've looked at Annie Atkins who I first became aware of after her work on The Grand Budapest Hotel. I loved the graphics and visuals for the film so it was interesting to see some of her other work and learn more about how she started based on the information on her website. It was interesting to learn how she developed as a design to become a set designer as she initially studied graphic communication. She classes herself as a graphic designer for film, games and real life, which is a statement I would like to explore more in relation to my own practice after graduation. I particularly like the open-ended nature of this statement as it classifies what she does but doesn't discount more traditional areas of graphic design.

Upon exploring her work and website I discovered she runs a workshop in which she teaches participants about her practice and how they can employ her techniques and tricks to create there own props and outcomes. These workshops are rooted in period pieces as this is the area Annie works within. I plan on undertaking one of these workshops post-graduation as they are £700 as it would be interesting to develop my skills in creating more historic, period pieces as this is something I've not yet explored.
