Studio Build

The lecture given by Micheal C Place was particularly interesting as he went through his own story of how he became a graphic designer and not just his current work. I found this particularly interesting as he shared his personal interests which he incorporates within his designs such as his love for music as he originally set out design record sleeves. His early inspiration for this was covers for bands such as Iron Maiden, Motörhead. He was fascinated by the artwork but didn't understand it was graphics and tarted drawing logos, customising jackets etc. Initially he was interested in technical drawings and typography which only grew further when he was given a rotring pen in school. consequently all his interests at a young age lead him to pursue graphics as career staring with a foundation in Scarborough and then an OND in York and then an HND in Newcastle.
Personally I found this lecture particularly interesting as we got to hear how some successful started and what they're influenced by to see how that informs the work and practise. Consequently I found the idea of not letting history rules your work but let it inform whilst trying new things an interesting thought that I will try to apply to my own practise. In addition Build work with multiple people across different disciplines to create interesting and unique work which has highlighted the importance of collaboration as you can create more impressive work based on better ideas as you can feed of each others ideas. I also found the breath of clients that Build work will interesting as they work for companies of all sizes and not just big corporate brands. This was particularly interesting as he discussed the different ways certain clients interact, finding that smaller businesses are usually better to work with due to there involvement within the design processes which help the design processes. Overall I found the lecture particularly interesting as Build didn't just talk through there work but there story in relation to what inspires them, how they work and how they started which as a student is good to hear as it reminds you that everyone started somewhere and you don't just become a talented designer overnight.
